‘Ptarmigans’ is a song written by Erika and Chloe Tietjen and sung by the T Sisters on their Jingletown rooftop.

This piece was partially inspired by Heather McHugh’s modern translation of a well known Horacian ode. Her translation complicates the oft taken for granted notion of “carpe diem”:

She writes…
“Think less of more tomorrows
more of this one second endlessly unique
it’s jealous even as we speak
and it’s about to split again”

our lyrics:
Sing a song of augury and play it twice

Handmade Business Cards on the Road

We never did get around to making business cards before leaving for the Northwest adventure. Luckily I had brought a rubber eraser and carved a stamp on a lovely sunny day in Mendocino while visiting our buddies, the Blushin’ Roulettes.

One side of the cards has the handmade rubber stamp, the other side has a unique watercolor design which I worked on at a beautiful river and camp spot on the way up to Oregon.

To the Coast:

Inspired and refreshed, we headed for Mendocino to visit our buddies Angie and Cas. On our way we had to stop in Booneville for our first of many wheels of cheese. Rachel swears she saw the legendary “Beer”.

We wound our way through the woods till we got to Old Mill Farm, the majestic domicile of Angie and Cas. All that night, we feasted on pig and cider as if we were dining in the great halls of Beowulf. The next day we were ready to jam, blackberry and Americana style. Angie taught us a song of hers, the words of which we’d previously been ‘improvising’, called On the Banks.

First Stop: Sebastopol/Santa Rosa

Our first stop was Sebastopol to celebrate the upcoming marriage of our beautiful buddy Bria. We were reunited with our sister band, Picasso, and followed them to Santa Rosa for some long overdue collaboration.

Feeling exhausted after the recording session, we treated ourselves to a night on the town. Get it gurlz!

It took us about 5 hours to pack for the trip, granted Chloe had to make bread pudding and Erika had to pick up a bike rack at REI but finally we were ready to hit the road.
